Images at the right size for social media

Every network shows pictures at its own size and shape. Pictius gives you two ways to get there: Export for Social Media resizes the whole image to a preset such as an Instagram post or a YouTube thumbnail in one step, and the Crop tool lets you decide exactly which part of the photo fills the frame. Both run in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.

Export at a preset size, step by step

This is the quickest way when the whole picture, or its center, is what you want to show.

  1. Open your image with File ▸ Open… (Ctrl+O), or drop it onto the editor.
  2. Choose File ▸ Export for Social Media…
  3. Pick a preset in the list on the left. The preview on the right shows the result at the preset’s exact size in pixels.
  4. Choose the mode under the preview. Cover (crop) fills the whole frame and trims what sticks out, evenly on both sides. Fit (letterbox) keeps the entire picture and fills the empty bands with white.
  5. Click Export. The image downloads as a PNG named after your document, the network and the preset.

The presets

Export for Social Media includes these sizes, in pixels:

  • Instagram: Post 1080 x 1080 and Story/Reel 1080 x 1920.
  • Facebook: Post 1200 x 630 and Cover 820 x 312.
  • Twitter/X: Post 1200 x 675 and Header 1500 x 500.
  • YouTube: Thumbnail 1280 x 720 and Channel Banner 2560 x 1440.
  • TikTok: Video 1080 x 1920. LinkedIn: Post 1200 x 627. Pinterest: Pin 1000 x 1500.

Choose the framing yourself with the Crop tool

Cover always crops from the center. When your subject is off to one side, or you need a size that is not in the list, such as a 4:5 portrait post of 1080 x 1350, crop first:

  1. Press C for the Crop tool.
  2. In the Properties panel, open the ratio list and choose 1 : 1 (Square), 4 : 5 (8 : 10), 16 : 9 or 3 : 2, or Custom W : H for any other proportion.
  3. For an exact pixel size, choose W x H x Resolution instead, type the width and height (for example 1080 and 1350) and keep px as the unit. The cropped result is resized to that size.
  4. Drag inside the box to move it and drag its handles to resize it; the proportion is kept. Press X to swap between portrait and landscape.
  5. Press Enter to crop, then save with File ▸ Export As… (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+W) as JPG, PNG or WebP, with the quality you choose.

Start from a canvas of the right size

To design a post from scratch, open File ▸ New… The Social Media tab has Instagram posts in 4:5 and 1:1, Story / Reel Cover, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest and TikTok, and the YouTube tab has Thumbnail, Channel Banner and End Screen. Each template is built from layers: double-click the thumbnail of a text layer in Layers to change the words, and to add a photo select the gray Photo layer, paste your image and press Ctrl+Alt+G to clip it to that area. For an empty canvas at the same size, type the width and height in the dialog instead.

  • Keep important text away from the edges of covers and banners: networks often place a profile picture or buttons over them.
  • Export photos as JPG or WebP for smaller files, and graphics with flat colors or text as PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram post be?

The Instagram Post preset is 1080 x 1080 pixels and Story/Reel is 1080 x 1920. For a 4:5 portrait post, use the Crop tool with W x H x Resolution set to 1080 x 1350 px and export the result with File ▸ Export As…

Why is part of my photo cut off?

In Cover (crop) mode the picture fills the whole frame, so whatever does not fit the new shape is trimmed from both sides. Switch to Fit (letterbox) to keep everything, or crop it yourself first with the Crop tool to choose which part stays.

Can Export for Social Media save a JPG?

No, it always saves a PNG. If you need a JPG or WebP, crop or resize the image first and save it with File ▸ Export As…, where you can also set the quality.

Does it enlarge small images?

Yes. The picture is scaled to fill the preset, so a photo smaller than the preset is enlarged and can look soft. Start from an image at least as large as the size you need.

Can I resize a whole set of photos for one network?

Yes, with Actions. Record an action that resizes with Image ▸ Image Size… (the Default Actions set already includes Resize to 1080 px Wide) and run it over many files with File ▸ Automate ▸ Batch… Export for Social Media itself is not recorded in actions.
